History Dating

When the oak tree from The Virginia Tech Grove was cut a cross section of the tree was cut along with the slabs to be able to date the growth rings. The rings were counted to get a rough estimate of the age of the tree and marked with historical dates. The tree is dated to have started growing rougly around 1700. Above is a photo of the tree prior cutting, photos of the cross section with the slabs, and some rings marked with important dates. Dr. Carolyn Copenheaver, from the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, was the person responsible for the dendrochronology on the white oak tree and the Wood Enterprise Institute greatly thanks and appreaciates her for doing so.
