Zero Calorie Quarter Pounder

On Tuesday April 12th the College of Natural Resources held their annual awards banquet at the Inn at Virginia Tech, bringing together various members in the college in recognition of many students’ and faculty’s achievements. Members of the Wood Enterprise Institute were there in celebration with Mr. Brooks M. Whitehurst, a large sponsor of the Wood Enterprise Institute, and his son enjoying the ceremony. The WEI team had crafted a special surprise for Mr.Whitehurst to thank him for all his help, which they wanted to present to him during the ceremony.

At the tail end of the ceremony the Dean of the college recognized the Wood Enterprise Institute and the team’s accomplishments this semester and allowed the students and faculty advisor to present a gift to Mr.Whitehurst. The students asked him “how do you make a zero calorie quarter pounder?” and proceeded to present him with one. A zero calorie quarter pounder is essentially a small hammer attached to a piece of wood that pounds a quarter. The quarter pounder was crafted by the students with wood from the white oak tree donated from the president’s grove as well as from the sycamore tree donated from the henderson lawn. The piece from the white oak tree contained the growth ring of the year from which Mr.Whitehurst graduated from Virginia Tech and was laser engraved with the year as well as a Virginia Tech symbol. The quarter pounder was signed by the WEI students and was personally presented to Mr.Whitehurst in front of the college.

After the ceremony many members of the college came up to the students and faculty advisor asking questions about the historical tables that the WEI team is constructing and selling this semester and were able to view the historical table which was located at the Inn during the ceremony. The table is constantly on tour and being moved to various locations for people to see.
